Three Tab Shingles

Although most of us rarely give it a second thought until a problem occurs, the roof over our heads is one of the most important components of our homes. Our roofs protect us, our stuff and the rest of our home from the elements so when something goes wrong it is imperative to make the right choices to get it fixed as quickly as possible. One of those choices is the type of material to use; asphalt shingles, including three tab shingles are one choice.

These days’ asphalt roofing shingles are the most popular choice when it comes to roofing materials, for good reason. Just some of the reasons asphalt shingles are so popular includes versatility, cost and ease of installation.

Asphalt roofing shingles are pretty simple. They consist of a mat or backing material made from fiberglass or a cellulose material, an asphalt mixture and a layer of mineral granules to help protect the asphalt layer from degrading. There are two types of asphalt shingles available on the market, architectural, which consist of multiple layers and single layer or three tab shingles.

Asphalt shingles come in three grades, good, better, best. Three tab shingles tend to be the least expensive of the three but that does not mean they are not any good. Three tab shingles are asphalt shingles that consist of a single layer of material making them thinner and therefore less expensive then others of their kind.

Here are just a few of the benefits of three tab shingles:

  • Economical - Three tab shingles are the least expensive choice when it comes to roofing material because they use less material then their counterparts, architectural or dimensional shingles.
  • Plenty of variety for color - Three tab shingles come in a vast variety of colors and styles to make it easy to have not only a solid dependable roof but a aesthetically pleasing one as well.
  • Typical life span of 20 years - Most three tab shingles offer a 20 year limited warranty.
  • Class A fire rating - Most three tab shingles offer a Class A fire rating which means they are made to withstand fire offering solid protection and lower home owner’s insurance rates.
  • Ease of installation - Three tab shingles are simple and easy to install and do not require any “special” handling.
  • Weight - Because three tab shingles are made up of a single layer of materials they are usually as much as 50% lighter then other types of roofing materials. These differences in weight make them a good choice for repairs when a full tear down is not an option or the roof structure will not support the added weight.

Although not as expensive as architectural shingles, three tab shingles offer many of the same benefits if asphalt shingles are your choice for roofing material.
